Safe Surgery 2015: South Carolina Training

Hello and thank you for your participation in this study.  The purpose of this training is to familiarize you with the use of a tool for measuring teamwork in the operating room.

If you would like to download and print out a copy of the tool to use while going through this training, please click here.

We are specifically interested in five elements of teamwork: clinical leadership, team communication, assertiveness, coordination, and respect.  You will be trained to rate each element separately and to provide a rating of teamwork overall.

For each teamwork element, we will give a definition and show you the specific behaviors that you will be asked to rate.  Please rate each item on a scale of 1 to 5.  Unless otherwise noted, one indicates that a behavior "NEVER" occurred during the observation.  Three indicates that a behavior occurred "ABOUT HALF" of the time.  Five indicates that a behavior "ALWAYS" occurred.

Finally, you will see two brief videos for each teamwork element and have an opportunity to rate them.  Your ratings will be recorded for use in our study.

Please consider the following definitions as you complete this training.

  • Clinical leadership: Exerting control or playing a decision-making role in the patient’s clinical care.  Any member of the team may demonstrate clinical leadership in the course of a surgical procedure.
  • Team members: Any individual present and participating in a surgical procedure (physicians, nurses, surgical techs).
  • Clinical tasks: The specific activities performed by team members in the course of a surgical procedure.

Please make a note of any questions or concerns that arise in the course of this training.  You will have an opportunity to discuss them.

This training uses YouTube to display videos. If your computer does not have access or cannot view videos from YouTube, please use this training site instead.

Thank you for your participation.
